Profile of Jinka University

Foundation and History:

Jinka University (IKU) is a Public Higher Education Institution (HEI) established in 2017 with regulation No. 353/2015 of the Council of Ministers of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. JKU is one of the youngest fourth generation comprehensive universities in the country. Geographically, JKU is located in South-western Ethiopia of South Omo Zone in the vibrant town of Jinka at a distance of around 750 Kms from the capital city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa.

JKUs strategic location and the catchment areas it covers are endowed with enormous natural cultural resource which creates conducive scenario to accomplish the three important pillars: teaching-learning, research, and community engagement and technology transfer.

Ever since its establishment, JKU has been striving to achieve the three pillars through the opening and expansion of demand driven undergraduate and graduate programmes, carrying out problem solving researches, rendering need based community services and creating, adopting and adapting appropriate technologies to be transferred to the wider community.

Mission, Vision and Core Values of JKU:-

Vision:

JKU has the vision of becoming one of the top five comprehensive universities in Ethiopia by 2030.

Mission:

Produce need-based knowledgeable, skilled and competent graduates; Conduct researches focusing on technology transfer and disseminate the results and provide community and consultancy services in accordance with the need of the society

Core Values:

JKU promotes the following core values: quality service, priority to customer, diversity and inclusiveness; gender responsiveness; innovativeness and creativeness; team work and commitment; and internationalization.

 

In order to achieve its vision, mission, and core values JKU developed and implement a 10

Year development/strategic plan with four areas based on the potential of South Omo Zone and the surrounding catchment it covers: These are: 1) Livestock and Fishery Resources; Cultural Diversity and Tourism; 3) Biodiversity; and 4) Agro industry

In this regard, JKU has untapped potential for collaboration and joint engagement with Russian Universities in the following areas:

* Agro-Industry

* Biodiversity

*Livestock and Fishery Resources

*Cultural Diversity and Tourism;

 

In particular, JKU wants to forge collaboration with Russian Universities focusing the above mentioned potential areas through education and training, research, community services, and technology transfer. JKU wants to invite top ranking Russian Universities that are interested to jointly develop/expand undergraduate and graduate programmes in these focus areas. It is of JKUs interest to attract best Russian scholars and researchers to forge research project on mutual areas of interest.

Colleges and Departments of JKU:

Currently, JKU run 29 undergraduate programmes under five colleges, namely College of Agriculture and Natural Resource (CANR), College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH), College of Natural and Computational Sciences (CNCS), College of Health Sciences (CoHS) and College of Business and Economics (CoBE). Moreover, JKU has completed its preparation to launch postgraduate programmes in seven (7) fields of specialization (starting from September 2021) such as: agricultural economics, animal production, development economics, business administration (MBA), accounting and finance, laser spectroscopy, and social anthropology. Staff and Student Composition:

Currently, JKU has around Nine Hundred and Seventeen (917) staff members; of which 267 are academic and the renaming 750 are administrative. Whereas, the student population of JKU is above five thousand (5000) whom are attending their undergraduate studies both in the regular and extension (weekend) sessions. So far, JKU has managed to graduate around 2000 students in two different batches in various disciplines.

Internationalization:

Irrespective of its young age, JKU has been working hard to forge partnership and collaboration with a number of local and international institutions and organizations in order to strengthen the quality of education it delivers, improve the capacity of its staff in research, community engagement and technology transfer activities. The university has been signing various Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in order to establish the foundation for better collaboration with known institutions all over the world. JKU has signed more than 20 MoUs with domestic and international institutions and organizations.

Besides, as part of its internationalization effort JKU has received international students from the Republic of South Sudan for training in different undergraduate programmes. JKU would like to be the choice of various international students, scholars, and researchers in order to achieve its set vision, mission and core values in the coming ten years and beyond.

Internationalization would be one of the core values where JKU strives to attract a large number of international students all over the world, attract experienced scholars and researchers not only to produce qualified graduates at all level, but also to strengthen the capacity of its staff in research, scientific knowledge production, and publication on reputable journals.

In this regard, JKU would like to express its strong interest to work with Russian Universities in the realms of education and training, research and community engagement and technology transfer in the areas of collaborative interest.
